JOEY UEK CSCS
FITNESS MANAGER
Statement of Philosophy and Methodology
I have spent my entire adult life learning the mechanics of the human body and how the different skeletal muscular systems interact to product athleticism. I first experienced resistance training as a teenager and after high school graduation, joined the United States Marine Corps. As a Marine, I learned creative new ways to push my body and was able to experience first-hand how my body adapted to these stresses. As I progressed further in my training, I realized a few things. I enjoy it. I am good at it. I seem to understand the discipline in ways others simply don’t. But most importantly, I eventually learned that a career could be made from it.
After two tours of duty with the Marines, I formalized my interest with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. During college, I was certified as a personal trainer through the AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine. My first training job was as a personal trainer in a corporate environment. During this time, I was fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most intelligent people in the field. This helped me determine the route I wanted to take my career. One year after graduation, I took the leap to starting my own company, Next Level Training. Continuing education is the keystone to my business. I have attended countless seminars and received several accreditations, certifications, licenses.
I have always felt fortunate to have not only found my passion, but to have been given the gifts to pursue it professionally. At the heart of it, my one true goal is to share my gifts to help people. I help people heal, and achieve their untapped potential locked within every person. I love to take what I’ve learned, and disseminate those best practices to colleagues and clients. Every time I learn or teach, the industry of professional training takes a step forward. I look forward ushering in a new era where collaboration and knowledge sharing is the norm. By always sharing what we know instead of guarding “trade secrets,” I believe we can take the entire industry to the next level.

Philosophy and Statement on Methodology
The athlete/coach relationship is built upon mutual trust. My job is to train clients through motivation, inspiration, and sincerity. A client will always work harder when they know their coach has their best interests at heart.
Workouts build character and help to bring out the best in people. There is no fast track to success through training. Only through metered and measured effort can you see gains – slow and steady is the key. One application of this is in speed training. Speed is unlocked through relaxation, which is counter-intuitive. The harder you try to run, the slower you will go. This relates to life in that working toward a goal takes persistence and patience. The most rewarding thing I impart to clients is confidence. Oftentimes, people limit themselves by their own perceptions. As a coach, I help them to see through these imagined barriers to achieve levels of success they may not have even known were possible.
I do not believe there is any one right way to do things. Success to me is a culmination of doing a lot of little things correctly every day. It is understanding the fundamentals and being willing to put in the work needed to perfect the basics. Small opportunities for greatness occur every day, and if you take advantage of these small opportunities, you will eventually achieve greatness.

In terms of athletic resumes, few are a hard-hitting as that of little 5’2” linebacker Dr. Jen Welter. Jen first fell in love with the gym at age 14. At that time, Jen was a ranked tennis player in the state of Florida. When a coach told Jen she was neither big enough nor strong enough to achieve her goal of playing professional tennis, she decided to get strong. Though Jen stopped playing tennis, she stayed in the gym, and first became certified as an aerobics instructor at age 18.
No matter what Dr. Jen has done, she has always remained dedicated to fitness. She loves sharing her love of working out with others, helping clients develop confidence and comfort in the gym, and mostly helping others want to come to the gym. Jen believes success in the gym is both physical and mental, and her PhD in Psychology helps all her clients “work it out” on every level.
Though you might think Dr. Welter never leaves the gym, for the past 13 years, Jen has also played women’s professional football. Jen spent her first two seasons playing for the Mass Mutiny, then she came south to Texas. Jen played her first season in Dallas with the Dallas Dragons. Directly following that season, Welter left the Dragons and joined the Dallas Diamonds in fall of 2004. Jen recently completed her 10th season with the Dallas Diamonds, and in that time, she was named an All-American 7 times, bringing her career total to 8. In her tenure as a Diamond, the team won four World Championships (’04, ’05, ’06, & ’08), and played in, yet did not win the 2013 Championship.
In addition to her success with the Dallas Diamonds, Dr. Welter has also played football at the International Level. In 2010, Jen was one of 45 women selected to represent the United States at the International Federation for American Football’s (IFAF) inaugural Women’s World Championship (WWC). Team USA traveled to Stockholm Sweden where they swept the competition and won a gold medal. As a member of Team USA, Welter was so small that her teammates referred to her as “Kid”, but size didn’t stop the Kid from leading her team in tackles and being named to the All-World All-Star Team. In 2013, Jen was one of only 14 women from the 2010 Gold medal team, among the 45 selected to play at the 2nd IFAF WWC. In 2013, Team USA successfully defended the Gold Medal in Vantaa Finland, and Jen won her 2nd Gold Medal.
Throughout, her football career Jen pursued her education. Not only did 2013 bring Welter her 2nd Gold Medal, but it also brought her PhD in Psychology. Jen officially became Dr. Welter with the publication of her dissertation, The Wonderlic Classic Cognitive Ability Test as a measure of player selection and success for Quarterbacks in the National Football League.
Dr. Welter’s success in both football and education has been supported by her fitness career, which began in high school, when she first became certified to teach aerobics by AFAA. While getting her BS from Boston College in Marketing, her Masters in Sport Psychology and PhD in Psychology from Capella, and throughout her football playing career, Jen has always stayed true to her passion for health and fitness. Throughout her 17 year fitness career, Jen has taken certifications with AFAA, Reebok, NESTA, and NASM. Dr. Welter is currently an Expert rated CPT.

Biography and Training Specialty
The key to a better quality of life is moving well and being strong. After establishing these qualities, all other fitness goal become easily attainable. Any goal - fat loss, bodybuilding, or athletics - starts with quality movement and strength. Not everyone can be an athlete. EVERYONE can be more athletic.
I played Division 1 baseball at West Chester University. I studied athletic training and coached baseball at Delaware State University. Through these experiences I learned how important movement quality is not just athletics but everyday quality of life. Add strength to proper movement, and you will be on your way to any fitness goal.
What I have learned over the last 17 years of personal training is that most people get much better IN the gym but that does not translate to OUTSIDE the gym. What good is dead lifting 500 pounds, if you hurt every time you run around with your kids?
Becoming pain free, moving better, and getting stronger, in that order, are the components required for attaining all of your fitness goals. Don't use "getting older" as excuse for not getting in the shape that you want. I strive to make sure that you not only feel good at the end of the workout, but also better and stronger in everyday life.

Quality of life…
We all know that we need to exercise and eat right. Its hard though in our busy everyday lives; kids, work, school, traffic, pets, meetings and everything else that life throws at us. We just can’t find the time or the energy to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Life takes over, time passes, and suddenly you realize you are heading down the slippery, unhealthy slope of no return.
No one needs to sell you physical fitness, it sells its' self. Working out and dieting is a necessary evil for most people, and frankly, most people just don’t know how to do it. They finally get up the courage to walk into a gym and are completely overwhelmed. Getting a personal trainer seems like an expensive way for someone to teach you something about working out and dieting, that you should already know.
If you have read this far, and I have your attention, please read on. I think you will find the rest interesting.
I have heard and experienced a lot in the 30+ years that I have been training people. It all comes down to pretty much everything that I wrote above. But it goes much deeper than that. What it is really all about is quality of life. My philosophy is just that. Once you start taking care of yourself physically, your whole life changes. You are no longer tired and lethargic. You have new energy, sleep better, and people find you easier to be around. Your quality of life increases 10 fold, and you wonder why you never did this before.
Come see me. Lets have a chat and get you headed in the right direction…
